Fresh PNU leadership dispute at tribunal

A fresh leadership row has hit the Party of National Unity (PNU). According to a notice in advertisements in the newspapers, top officials of the party, the Registrar of Political Parties and Trade Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya are required to appear at the Political Parties Tribunal on September 17 for a hearing.The dispute has been taken to the tribunal by Anastasia Munyendo, the former long-serving party treasurer who was demoted to secretary for social services during a delegates conference on May 24.Ms Munyendo has named Munya as well as the party officials John Kamama (organising secretary), Paul Rukaria (first national vice chairman) and the PNU Elections Board as respondents in the case.PNU Secretary General John Anunda and the Registrar of Political Parties are also named as interested parties in the case.Munyendo claims she was short-changed during the May delegates conference which saw allies of Munya take top positions in the party.PNU new list of officials was gazetted by the Registrar of Political Parties on June 7, 2019.

Munyendo claims she was not consulted during the sharing of new positions after Munya and Kamama buried the hatchet that had delayed the changes of the one-time ruling party.Kamama had gone to court nine times to frustrate the takeover of the party by the Munya faction.Kamama, who was previously the chairman, in May surprisingly agreed to drop his contention for the chairmanship of the party and opted to go for the lower position.
